Rejection

March 26th, 2009 · 6 Comments · Favorites, Memoirs

Check out this cool letter I received from AEON yesterday.

letter

Cool, huh? My favorite sentence is the middle one that begins, “Unfortunately, we regret to…”

Just kidding, that is not my favorite sentence.

I’m not a big fan of any sentence that begins with “unfortunately” and “regret to.” I am also not a smart man. I am also not a good person. However, if something is both unfortunate and regrettable I won’t do it. So, beginning a sentence with “unfortunately” and “regret to” makes no sense to me.

“Unfortunately, I regret to be taking a shit on your carpet right now.”

“Unfortunately, I regret to have fucked your wife for the past six months and enjoyed every second of it.”

Ah. Anyways. Rejected again. It’s funny how fast life changes. Since September 15th (the day I was fired), I have been rejected in many ways.

Even people that don’t like me think I write well. Yet every single thing I submit for publication: rejected.

People tell me to apply for work. Yet every single job I apply for: rejected.

I haven’t applied to any Corporate Software Engineering jobs yet, though. In other words, my life is not that bad since willingly subjecting myself to the corporate tech world would still be a step down.

I hung up all those rejection slips on my wall. Here’s how that looks.

letter

Yeah. Well, I threw my other rejection notices away earlier in the year. I won’t do that any more though. And my short-term goal is to collect as many of those rejection slips as I can. I want to cover my wall with them. That way, I will remember that I am doing something.

    Allen – Thanks man :D

O – Hopefully that means you love me more. But even if you still love me the same large amount as before that’s OK.

mtl – Well. Um. At least I don’t look down on software engineers. Unless they’re short. Like you!

Bowman, have you read “Martin Eden” by Jack London? If not, I’m begging you to read it. It’s about an aspiring writer in the East Bay. The East Bay of 100 years ago, but as you’ll see, that makes the story no less relevant.

Justin – It’s funny you mention Jack London. I was just discussing him with my mother last night. Did you know he actually lived in Benicia for about one year? For some reason that is amazing to me. Maybe I’ve gotten drunk in the same places that he did. And if not, I should figure out where those places are and get on that.
